So, how do I start?
Having worked with organizations to drive incremental changes and transformative initiatives, I've learned that early success is often tied to establishing a clear foundation. This typically involves answering key questions such as:
- Why do we need to change?
- What do we need to change?
- What does our future organization look like?
These foundational elements are usually catalyzed by an organizational imperative and kickstarted through executive visioning and roadmapping sessions. Drawing from past imperatives like establishing an e-commerce presence, adopting Agile principles, and transitioning to the cloud, we can apply valuable lessons to the emerging AI initiatives.
Some companies may opt for an ad hoc or skunk works approach, lacking proper planning, funding, or accountability for predefined objectives. As the saying goes, "culture eats strategy for lunch," indicating that without a solid foundation, executive buy-in, and adequate resources, the status quo will always inhibit change.
When embarking on the AI journey, organizations often fall into two categories: those grappling with FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) and those picking up (or discarding) the pieces of failed AI initiatives. On the FUD side, there is fear about missing the AI train, uncertainty about where to start, and doubts about AI hype. These are all justified reactions as the amount of AI news is simply staggering and daunting. Many companies will jump the gun with top-down “Just Do AI” initiatives that result in poor results, churn, and ultimately distrust.
It's crucial for organizations to develop AI as a core competency. This means assessing the current state, establishing a clear vision, and knowing how to continuously innovate: grok what AI is relevant to your org, build the mental models to know when then how to go from Proof of Concept to Production, and where to invest your most valuable resource (people’s time).
Here are some key areas to focus on:
- Evaluate your current toolset and assess AI opportunities at Levels 1 through 3
- Develop a vision of your AI-enabled organization and create a roadmap for implementation
- Establish metrics and governance frameworks
- Align AI tools with your tech stack
- Develop a data strategy encompassing compliance and internal data use
- Recognize that AI implementation is a change management project, necessitating process and cultural transformation
- Prioritize communication and collaboration within the organization
- Embrace continuous innovation as a core competency
Simply keeping pace with your industry is no longer enough. The move to AI demands swift and decisive action. If you don't have a plan in place, it's time to create one. "The future favors the bold" has never been more relevant. Think beyond Level 1 tools and envision becoming a leader in your industry through continuous innovation. By fostering this culture, you can establish a competitive edge that sets you apart and propels your organization into the future.
